In 2017, Luis Hilti and Matilde Igual Capdevila won a competition to represent Liechtenstein at the Venice Biennale, which led to the exhibition The Line.
Our proposal envisioned exhibiting an arbitrary cross-section of Liechtenstein, encompassing everything found between the Rhine and the high alpine areas. The aim was to present an honest depiction of the country rather than promoting a preconceived image.
To create this cross-section, we proposed walking along that line with students over the course of one semester and documenting the journey.
We designed the exhibition to be versatile, ensuring it could fit into a car while also adapting to the 25-meter-long exhibition space in the Palazzo Trevisan, the University of Liechtenstein, and the main square in Vaduz.
Eighteen wonderful students worked (and walked) tirelessly with us for half a year, day and night, to bring the exhibition to life.
The first opening took place on May 26, 2018, at the Palazzo Trevisan in Venice.
The second opening was held in the center of Vaduz on June 5, 2018. In the picture, we are with the students of Studio Venice.
The third and final opening of The Line took place at the University of Liechtenstein, marking the conclusion of our project, which ultimately led to the foundation of the Institute for Linear Research.
